What is a Bonus in Switzerland?

In practice, employment agreements often contain inaccurate or intransparent salary or bonus provisions. The term "bonus" does not even exist in the Swiss labour law, and therefore it needs to be analysed in each individual case what the term bonus stands for. Depending on the result, an employee either has a right to receive a certain bonus or the payment of a bonus is at the sole discretion of the employer.

Not only the salary or bonus payments, but also allowances and benefits for employees as well as working tools, such as the use of a company car, need to be settled and drafted carefully. Under certain circumstances, allowances may turn out to be normal salary, e.g. in case allowances are too high.

What about Sick Leave Payments in Switzerland?

The salary for sick leave / absence due to incapability of work is in Switzerland often settled by the voluntary paid sick leave insurance (e.g. 80% for 730 days with waiting period). If there is no paid sick leave insurance, the term of the sick leave salary depends on the numer of years of service and ranges from 3 weeks to a couple of months.
